What Is Entertainment?

Entertainment is a broad term that encompasses a large variety of activities that entertain, inform, or just entertain us. Entertaining is a form of recreational activity that either holds the attention of an audience and/or provides enjoyment and joy for those watching. For example, a discussion about food safety would likely engage multiple types of people with very different socio-economic status and cultural backgrounds - a fact that any one informative television show cannot claim.

The most diverse form of entertainment is the interactive entertainment. Entertaining that can involve interaction with other people is not necessarily a "form of entertainment" per se, but a means of communication on a highly intensive level. People who enjoy this interactive entertainment are not necessarily interested in watching television programs with one or more characters. For example, if a person enjoys the film "The Secret", but doesn't care to sit through a talk show about the film, he/she will still be able to enter into a conversation about the film and experience the experience of being in the company of others who are also interested in the film.

In the world of entertainment there are many forms of entertainment available. To label one form of entertainment as 'entertainment' in today's world is tantamount to dismissing any other forms of entertainment out there as frivolous. With such a broad definition in place, it will be hard for entertainment to ever really gain a foothold in society as a true form of art. If nothing else, entertainment should be seen as the cousin of art and the definition of which should include the word 'entertainment'.
